So, what exactly is Chest of Scrolls? Chest of Scrolls or, 'CoS' for short, is an open world rpg set in a magical, medieval realm.
Now, outside of that core concept, much of the early game setting has been carefully written out below - to further reveal what you as the player may expect. So let's get you introduced, shall we?
It's Not All About You
To remove any chance of confusion, you as the player exist in two forms. There's 'You', sitting at home immersing yourself in an ASCII world with friends and then there is, 'you', a small, insignificant character living in an unforgiving world. This will all make sense further down below.
Before you can start exploring the vastness of CoS, You must first create, 'you'. Give yourself a name and define yourself with skills.
Breath of Life
Remember defining big 'You' from little 'you'? That's now semi-important. Sure, little you exists but nothing else does! Take your hands and play deity for a short while. Define what the world should look like. Once finished, click 'generate' and begin your new life.
So, Where Are You?
Who knows! You're likely in one of two places depending on what options you selected. You're either near a town or out on your own. Regardless, take a look at that chest by your side.
"Oh wow! Starter items based around your character! How handy!"
This chest though. It doesn't quite look like a normal chest, what with it singing and speaking to you.
"How neat! A magical chest that works as guide!"
Ask it a question or two on how to get started. Maybe ask about a specific item and how it might be used. Or, ask it how it feels to be a chest.
The chest is a special item granted to only a select few. Now, as to why one was granted to you, only the world you created can answer that - I can't. And I'm the one that made it!
So Now What?
Well, who are you? Everyone has a purpose; what's yours? The world is alive around you and you have a lot to do. Some insider tips:
No one knows who you are? Introduce yourself.
You're hungry? Live off the land or turn hard earned coin to scrumptious food.
You got bored and burnt the entire livestock of a town? Watch people panic around you as famine plagues the land.
You tried to have your lord assassinated? Huh.
What? You died in the process? Hm.
Death and Resurrection
Really? Three days in and you've already died? Well, do you have any relatives? Continue your legacy through them. Live your new life as you like!
Death is a fairly permanent life-choice. As soon as you die, you are given the option to begin playing as a blood relative. If you are alone and no one ever loved you, then you may still choose a similar npc and begin living through them. Certain high-level figures are protected by magic so unfortunately, purposefully starving you and your family to then possess the king isn't available to you.
"But I really, really miss my original character!"
Then study the words of death and bring them back. However, head this warning, young necromancer: To tamper with the defining line of life and death requires the utmost price: a life in return.
The Costs of Magic
Magic was not intended for the living. Being powerful in nature, it should always be handled with care. Any word spoken is to ask for divine favor. To be deemed unworthy in the process however is to cast doom upon yourself.
Closure
I'm currently hard at work getting this concept to become a reality. Game mechanics are all written out and nearly ready to go - the biggest obstacle is bug testing and getting the first playable alpha-version ready for the masses. I plan to use this blog and this subreddit as a means of communication. Both are open for posts so if you have a question, an idea, or anything in particular about the game, feel free to either make a post or contact me personally here chestofscrolls@gmail.com
